The V. M. Art Gallery is the brainchild of Mr. Asif Rangoonwala, the present Managing Trustee.
It was established as a part of the Rangoonwala Trust in June 1987 to promote art education, fine arts and to provide a much needed outlet for artists, old and young, to display their works befittingly. It has thus served as a springboard for several budding artists, who today exhibit their works far and wide. In a brief span of 14 years, the Gallery has achieved the distinction of exhibiting Pakistan's best artists and hosting art exhibitions from England, Holland, France, China, Sri Lanka, Turkey, Canada, Australia, Italy, and Malaysia. Initially, such exhibitions were organized to familiarize Pakistani artists and art lovers with creative works from other parts of the world. In due course however, such exhibitions have become a regular feature of the Gallery's on-going programme.
The V. M. Art Gallery is on hire for art exhibitions and displays. The gallery has been completely refurbished-fitted out to create two new intimate spaces for the display of old, modern and contemporary art. Installation facilities for displaying, laying out, assemblage, suspension, grouping of objects d'art and artifacts are also available. The thematic factors radiate an atmosphere that is welcoming and dignified, yet essentially contemporary. The gallery's individual features are enhanced by refracted natural light captured by glass frontage, which may dexterously be combined with artificial light to illuminate displays. Another special feature is the split level wider gallery which is ideal for the display of two or three dimensional works of art. From the lower floor of the gallery a purposefully designed staircase leads up to a spacious two-winged art space suitable for displaying smaller works of art for more intimate viewing
The gallery is located within the Rangoonwala Community Centre. It comprises 100 square meters (1110 sq. ft.) of prime display area and 47 linear meters (151 rft) of wall hanging space. The display area is versatile and suitable for all manner of exhibition formats. The left segment of the area gives way to a wider split level gallery containing 47 linear meters (152 rft) wall hanging space. A private office, store room and (although not confined to the gallery) cafeteria, are also available.
The V. M. Art Gallery is fully air conditioned. Lighting is provided by individual LED Lamps with ultra violet coated glass located at a distance of 4 feet on centre. The recessed light fixtures are adjustable. The wider gallery also has access to natural light inlets with movable screens for controlling the inflow of light. A special feature of the gallery is the string hanging system on a continuous rail installed for display of two dimensional wall mounted works. A variable quantity of plinth is available as a backdrop for ceramics and sculpture display with natural light and fully adjustable halogen spot lights. A public address system, telephone, fax & e-mail have been installed. Generator facilities are provided. The management offers comprehensive exhibition organizing services and assist with all aspects of multi-media projection and print-related matters. Curatorship is also available on an hourly charge basis.
